Natural Material LAB investigates the architectural potential of raw, bio-based materials through research, experimentation, and hands-on practice. The work focuses on locally sourced fibers, plants, and earth-derived materials, examining their physical behavior, environmental performance, and cultural relevance.

Rather than treating materials as finished products, this research approaches them as living systems shaped by climate, geography, and human interaction. By combining material science, traditional knowledge, and contemporary architectural thinking, Natural Material Studies aims to develop low-impact, context-specific alternatives to conventional construction practices.

The goal is not only to test materials, but to rethink how architecture can emerge from local resources, collective knowledge, and ecological responsibility.

Natural Material Studies は、バイオベースの自然素材を対象に、調査・実験・実践を通して建築的可能性を探求する研究です。地域で入手可能な繊維、植物、土系素材に着目し、それらの物理的挙動、環境性能、そして文化的背景を検証します。

本研究では、素材を完成品として扱うのではなく、気候、地理、人の営みによって形成される「生きたシステム」として捉えます。材料科学、伝統的な知識、現代建築の思考を横断的に組み合わせることで、従来の建設手法に代わる、低環境負荷かつ場所性に根ざした建築のあり方を提案します。

その目的は、単に素材を評価することにとどまらず、地域資源や集合知、そして生態学的責任に基づいて建築がどのように生まれ得るのかを再考することにあります。
