BUGGIO VILLAGE AS CASE STUDY
VILLAGE-ING : REVIVING RURAL VILLAGES THRU LENS OF FUTURE SETTLEMENTS
Case study , research project in Ligurian Alps, Buggio
As an architect and urban theorist, my research is centered on sustainable forms of settlements, particularly in rural areas, within the framework of a circular economy. This focus is driven by the pressing issues of global warming and the need for sustainable living solutions.
The Unsustainability of Urban Centers
Cities, as we know them, are becoming increasingly unsustainable. The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted our perception of work and living spaces. During this period, the global community experienced a shift towards remote work, smart home technology, and the benefits of smaller, nature-integrated lifestyles.
Italy: The Ideal Case Study
In this context, Italy emerges as the perfect location to initiate our project. The country is home to many depopulated yet beautifully constructed villages, offering a unique opportunity to apply modern smart systems and establish a new model of living—one that I call "Village-ing: New Sustainable Way of Living Settlements."
Case Study: Buggio, Liguria, Italy
Our case study focuses on Buggio, a charming village in Liguria, Italy. We visited the place and conducted research to explore the potential of our project. Buggio, with its existing infrastructure and picturesque setting, serves as an ideal location to demonstrate how modern technology can enhance traditional rural living.
Our Vision for Future Villaging
The project village in Italy embodies these principles. It aims to create a self-sustaining, eco-friendly community that leverages modern technology to enhance traditional rural living. By integrating smart home systems and remote work capabilities, we strive to provide a balanced lifestyle that prioritizes environmental sustainability, economic viability, and social well-being.
Our goal is to demonstrate that rural areas can be vibrant, sustainable alternatives to urban centers, offering a high quality of life while addressing the urgent challenges posed by global warming. This village will serve as a model for future developments, showcasing how small, smart, and sustainable living can be the key to a resilient and prosperous future.
Future Villaging:
A new approach unlike nostalgic recreations of past rural life, our approach focuses on future villaging. This involves utilizing the existing infrastructure of Italy's beautiful, depopulated villages and infusing them with the latest in smart home technology, sustainable energy solutions, and remote work capabilities. This blend of old and new will create a thriving, forward-looking community that meets the needs of the 21st century while preserving the charm and character of traditional Italian villages.
